Lawmakers urging Cuomo to extend tenant protections

Jun 19, 2020 5:45 am
Amanda Fries is reporting for Capitol Confidential 56 state lawmakers are calling on Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to extend the protection of tenants statewide. The original eviction moratorium issued in March will expire Sat., June 20, and the second order issued by the governor in May does not provide the same protections. “Given the depth of the crisis, we are extremely concerned about mass evictions and displacement after June 20,” the legislators wrote. “Right now, New Yorkers should not have to worry about their most basic needs, like housing. All of their focus should be on the health and safety of their loved ones.” Affordable housing advocates and legislators fear a housing crisis is in the making should the protections be lifted, thereby resulting in a flood of evictions. While the eviction moratorium prevented landlords from pursuing an eviction if a tenant was behind on rent, it did not wipe away the resulting debt. Advocates were calling for rent payments to be canceled completely, but instead the state Legislature adopted a $100 million bill that allows tenants to apply for vouchers to cover rent for those impacted by COVID-19.
