NYBC declares blood emergency

Apr 25, 2019 2:00 pm
Shannon Young is reporting for Politico New York the New York Blood Center has declared a blood emergency and is urging people to help reverse a decline in regional donations. The center released data April 25 showing that its number of red blood cell donors has fallen steadily over the last decade, going from more than 270,000 in 2010 to just under 186,000 in 2019 — a 31 percent drop. The New York Blood Center said that blood supplies have reached critical lows, with all blood types well below a seven-day reserve. Supplies for B-negative and O-negative blood are especially low, with a reserve of only one to two days. O-negative is needed in emergency rooms as the universal blood type. Upcoming drives are scheduled to take place at Bard College, Stissing Mountain High School in Pine Plains, at the Kingston Donor Center at 51 Albany Avenue, Stanford Fire Company No. 1 in Stanfordville, and at Roosevelt High School in Staatsburg.
