William J. Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman that the Town of Ulster is listening to a proposal for a commercial-scale greenhouse that would use the town’s sewage treatment plant to convert methane to electricity and its treated sewage sludge to a heat source. Consultant Larry Cosenza said the town could convert methane produced by the plant to electricity and its treated sewage sludge to a heat source. He claimed the town's current burning of 79,788 square cubic feet of methane could produce enough electricity to save the town $2,693 each year. Town Supervisor James Quigley wants an efficiency study of the sewage treatment plant. “When we get that together, I will get back together with (consultants) so that the underlying assumptions ... about the generation of waste do not end up getting changed because of efficiencies,” he said.
