Windham board postpones vote on revised sign law
Carly Miller is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Windham Town Board has delayed its vote to legalize sandwich board signs, after its members agreed that more time was needed to iron out the details of the new law, following a third public hearing on the matter, April 12. “We’ve waited this long,” said board member Don Murray, who brought up concerns about what he called the law's overly restrictive language. Sandwich board signs are currently banned in Windham, however, late last year the owners of the Windham Spa challenged that prohibition, saying it limited the spa's visibility and profitability. Since then, board member Ian Peters has been working on a new draft with input from businesses, the architectural board and community members. The revisions would allow 25- by 45-inch sandwich signs to be displayed within 200 feet of a business, but the signs would have to be removed after business hours and during snowstorms, and could not impede traffic. Digital billboards and LED-lit signs would be banned, except for the signs that display gas prices. The board will vote on the revised sign law on April 26.
