Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk school officials investigating online homophobic comments

Melanie Lekocevic reports in the Ravena News-Herald that an online post with homophobic comments directed against the LGBTQ community is being investigated by the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk school district. “School officials have been made aware of the incident and are working with RCS High School faculty and law enforcement to identify and address the suspect(s),” according to a June 2 statement from the district. “The offending post featured a hate-filled address to those who potentially identify with the LGBTQ community.” School officials refused to release what the statement said, or where it was posted, but said several students alerted school officials. “Hate speech has no place at RCS,” according to the statement. “It is a violation of the student code of conduct, board of education policy, and may violate the law. Please take a moment to speak to your child about the importance of civility, both digitally and in person.” June is considered Pride month in the United States, honoring the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City that led to pro-gay protests and changes in many laws.
