David Lombardo reports at Capitol Confidential that 27 days into a government shutdown, a bill in Albany passed the Assembly this week that could give federal workers without pay more time to cover their local property tax bills. Municipalities would get the option to extend the payment deadline for property taxes until 90 days after the federal government opens again. In the Capitol region, there are around 14,000 furloughed and non-pay federal employees affected by the current shutdown. “As the federal government shutdown drags into its fourth week, it is critical that we do our part to assist those who are impacted,” Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, a Fresh Meadows Democrat said in a statement. “For anyone living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to care for their families, this loss of income and uncertainty is devastating.” The bill next heads to the State Senate.
