Work underway on sheriff's civil office

Dec 28, 2018 1:30 pm
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media that construction began Dec. 24, on a new space for use as a civil office by the Greene County Sheriff. That office processes paperwork for evictions, foreclosures, subpoenas and levies. The new space is located in the Greene County Office Building on Main Street in Catskill. According to Trafton, the creation of a working civil space is "another step in clearing the way for the state Commission of Corrections to approve a new county jail to be built in Coxsackie without violating county laws." According to state law, the sheriff's office cannot move its civil services out of Catskill, the county seat, without voter approval. The new space is expected to be completed in mid-January, Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden said. “There is no rush,” he said. “The existing house [where the current sheriff’s office is located] is mostly OK — unlike the jail.” Work is also currently underway on a temporary processing facility on Mansion Street in Coxsackie. Those renovations are slated to be completed the first week of January. In addition to the civil office, the sheriff’s office maintains satellites in Prattsville, Ashland, New Baltimore and Greenville, as well as the new Coxsackie location.
