Jul 05, 2019 2:15 pm
Kate Lisa is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media Columbia-Greene Community College President Jim Campion, 68, the college's fifth and longest-serving president, retires July 5, after 19 years of service. Campion spent a total of 51 years in the SUNY system, between his education and career, earning an associate degree in liberal arts from Dutchess Community College, a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY New Paltz, a master’s degree in educational administration and a graduate certificate in autism studies from SUNY Albany. He has served in the Columbia-Greene administration since 1974. “It’s bittersweet,” the Hyde Park native said of his departure. “I’ve made a lot of friends and acquaintances at the college over the years. It’s difficult to leave, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter of adulthood and to see what comes next.” Campion lives in Livingston with his wife, Donna. He expects to start retirement enjoying time off before potential consulting or other part-time work. Since taking over as president, Campion has steered the college through fluctuations in student enrollment, a recession and, in 2018, the formulation of a $20 million capital project, which includes bringing the campus into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, updating emergency and security systems, replacing important infrastructure, renovating space to host new programs and other energy-saving upgrades. Carlee Rader Drummer, president of Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson, Connecticut, will succeed Campion. Drummer will be formally appointed July 8.
