State police want to build new barracks in Chatham

May 03, 2018 11:30 am

Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the New York State Police have requested three acres of land from the town of Chatham to build a new barracks. The request was heard at the board's April 19 meeting. The police said they were unable to purchase the land, but hoped to have the property transferred to the agency. The new barracks would cost approximately $3 million to build. Having a barracks just north of Chatham Town Hall would enhance coverage and police presence in area, said Captain Michael Jankowiak, Troop K, Zone 1 commander. From Chatham the troopers would “cover all of northern Columbia County,” he said. A Chatham barracks would replace the current station in New Lebanon. Chatham Town Attorney Sal Ferlazzo said the state police presence would be "a great benefit to the town.” Jankowiak said the state police is in the “early stages” of this process.
