Republicans challenge Maloney's efforts for Congress and attorney general

Jul 20, 2018 12:23 pm
David Lombardo reports at Capitol Confidential that Republicans are doing whatever they can to stop U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney from running for both re-election and also in the Democratic primary for attorney general. Republicans have filed five almost-identical objections with the state Board of Elections. “In New York state, you cannot run for incompatible offices at the same time,” said John Ciampoli, the attorney on record with all the specific objections. “It’s no surprise that Dean Skelos associate John Ciampoli and his buddies in Albany are challenging my petitions because they know I’m the only candidate in the race who’s both independent and effective,” the 18th Congressional Representative Maloney said, skirting the issue. Maloney is currently running through a loophole, as the Democratic primary for his Congressional seat would have been in the Federal primary June 26, and his attorney general primary is on the state primary date in September. Previously, all the primaries would have been held on the same day, which made it impossible in New York to pursue two posts on the same date. Now, if Maloney wins the primary in September, he will run only as the Democrat for attorney general, and his party will have a blank spot Congressional line. But Maloney faces three other Democrats in the attorney general: Leecia Eve, former Senior Policy Adviser to U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton; Letitia James, the current New York City Public Advocate; and Zephyr Teachout, a Fordham Law professor and former candidate for Governor of New York and in the 19th Congressional District. These objections, the paper says, could end up in court. Read the full story at Capitol Confidential, the Times Union blog.
