Former Ulster PD announces intention to sue

Jul 24, 2020 5:45 am
Patricia R. Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman former Ulster County Public Defender Andrew Kossover intends to sue Ulster County and County Executive Pat Ryan for his dismissal as the county's chief defense counsel for the indigent. Kossover has served the county with a notice of claim, the first step in filing a lawsuit. According to Ulster County Attorney Clint Johnson, Kossover and his wife, Victoria, are seeking monetary damages for injuries to Kossover's reputation, as well as "personal injuries, economic losses, harms and damages" that Kossover says he suffered as a result of “intentional and deliberate false statements and misstatements” by Ryan and others in county government that were "defaming, libeling and slandering." In February, Ryan announced Kossover's resignation, although it now appears he was actually fired. Ryan said officials discovered that Kossover "repeatedly and inexplicably failed to submit routine and required paperwork" to the state requesting reimbursement on behalf of the department totalling nearly $2.5 million. "This is a fundamental failure of leadership within, and oversight of, the Public Defender’s office," Ryan said at the time. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
