Cuomo signs NY SAFE Act

Jan 16, 2013 7:49 am
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo Tues., Jan. 15, signed the NY SAFE (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement) Act, putting into place the toughest gun laws in the nation, according to a statement released by the Governor's Office. Among the law's provisions:
A ban on the sale of assault weapons, a ban on any magazine that can hold more than seven rounds, instant background checks on ammunition purchases at the time of sale, a requirement for mental health officials to report patients likely to engage in behavior dangerous to themselves and to others, and the creation of a statewide standard requiring recertification of pistol permits every five years. Kyle Adams writes in The Daily Mail on the local response to the new law. Adams spoke to the owner of a custom hand-loaded ammunitions company, who said the legislation makes no sense. Any law-abiding, reputable firearm-owner is outraged, he said. Another gun owner Adams spoke with another gun owner who said watching the governor discuss the SAFE Act made him deeply uneasy. He called it “the loss of America and what it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a safe place to raise your children. It’s supposed to be a place where you can exercise the rights that you were given.” Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
