The Basilica Soundscape event in Hudson, New York brought the town both good and bad media attention this weekend. “Hudson reminds me of Montreal in the nineties," says the "nineties alt-music queen" and former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, in a New York Magazine story championing the Basilica Soundscape event Sept. 13-14 at the Hudson waterfront venue she helps run. “It inspires me to see 25-year-olds graduating and coming here from Oberlin and silk-screening their own T-shirts.” In a positive review in The New York Times of the first night of the Basilica event, Ben Ratiliff wrote, "Hudson, where taste has become serious sport." Serious, indeed, in Saugerties, where while the first night's performances at Basilica were winding down, "singer," and model Sky Ferreira and boyfriend DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith were arrested on drug charges. The Daily Freeman had the details in their police blotter -- Smith gave a Catskill address, and was arrested with “42 decks” of heroin, and many driving and car violations; Ferreira, from Brooklyn, had ecstasy -- and New York Magazine added the context of their arrests and

mug shots. The duo took the stage at Basilica Sat., Sept. 14, sharing the stage as the model read the words of Catpower's “Nude as the News” (above, via YouTube) from her cell phone. On Twitter, Smith wrote, the arrest details come from a local police blotter, “not the outcome of a court case.” Across the river in Catskill, the verdict on Hudson is already in. There was both jealousy and loathing of Hudson in an Associated Press story in The Daily Freeman about a restaurant contest to fill Catskill's empty storefronts. Local proponent Nina Sklansky is quoted saying, “God forbid if the place turns into something like Hudson, but a little bit of it would be nice,” Sklansky said.
