Lauren Stanforth reports for the Albany Times Union that an attorney and realtor who works for the biggest company in Coeymans, the Port of Coeymans owned by Carver Laraway, is running for Town Supervisor. George McHugh says he resigned March 1 as the general counsel for Carver Companies, but he is still a realtor representing a Carver warehouse at a port in South Carolina. And McHugh's son runs that South Carolina port. And, the Times Union reports, last year McHugh was on the board of managers of a Carver limited liability company that dealt in commodities. "The concern is that (McHugh) would make every decision in favor of the port," said environmental activist Barbara Heinzen, who lives in New Baltimore, but regularly speaks against development at the Coeymans port just inside Albany County. Talking with the newspaper, McHugh said he would continue to do legal work for Laraway if asked. In the story, McHugh does not deny a conflict of interest but said, "The only people who have brought it up is the Times Union." McHugh, a Republican, will face two-term Democratic town supervisor Philip Crandall in the election. Crandall "narrowly won the office in 2015 in part because of suspicions that Republican Supervisor Stephen Flach's administration was acting too favorably on behalf of the port," Stanforth reports.
