New Greene County jail may cost more; may mean higher taxes

Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that when the Greene County Legislature voted to build a new jail they promised it would be an 80-bed facility. Now, after the Sept. 19 vote, a public meeting in Hunter Nov. 1 revealed the jail may be much larger, cost more, with presumably a larger tax increase. Already, Legislator William Lawrence wrote a story in The Greenville Pioneer recently promising a tax increase of just under seven percent. But now the state Commission of Corrections is telling the county they may need more female cells. “We will get CoC’s recommendations back on the (November) 20th,” Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden said. He estimated the cost to build the jail would be $70 million, not the $45 million discussed previously. In April, the current Greene County jail in Catskill was shut down for safety reasons. Legislators had been debating whether to build a new facility in Coxsackie and raise taxes, or save money by sharing a jail with Columbia County, costing a never-defined number of jobs. Groden refused to take questions from at least one member of the public at the meeting. Windham Legislator Lori Torgersen said the meeting, meant to set the facts straight, only made things more confusing. “I think the goal was to clear up misconceptions,” she said. “I don’t think you [Groden] did that...You clearly have a bias.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360.com.
