Gillibrand campaign has raised $3M

Apr 15, 2019 12:00 pm
Thomas Kaplan and Shane Goldmacher are reporting in The New York Times the U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's campaign raised $3 million in the first quarter of 2019. The sum ranked her last among the six senators currently running for president. Gillibrand has made running as a woman a central theme of her candidacy, and nearly two-thirds of her donors were women, said campaign spokeswoman, Meredith Kelly. Kelly said that 92 percent of contributions were under $200. Gillibrand transferred $9.6 million from her Senate account to her presidential campaign, and the campaign ended the quarter with $10.2 million in cash on hand. The Gillibrand campaign suggested that her fundraising has been impeded by a continuing backlash to her decision in 2017 to call for the resignation of Democrat Al Franken from the U.S. Senate over sexual harassment allegations. April 15 is the deadline for candidates to report their first-quarter fundraising to the Federal Election Commission. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont leads the candidates with more than $18 million raised in the past three months, followed by Senator Kamala Harris of California, former Representative Beto O’Rourke of Texas and Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind. according to information released by those campaigns.
