David Lombardo is reporting for the Times Union the state Republican Party has a new leader. Erie County Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy amassed sufficient support among the state GOP leadership in the past month to oust state party Chair Ed Cox. The official vote is scheduled to take place this summer. In a statement, Cox announced he would move on to work for President Donald J. Trump's re-election campaign, calling it "the most critical task at hand." Cox said, "Serving as chairman of the NYGOP over the last ten years has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life, and I will continue to actively help elect more Republicans here in New York." Saratoga County Republican Committee Chairman Carl Zeilman said, "Today is a new beginning for the New York state Republican Party." Zeilman said Langworthy's "experience, dedication and acumen" made him the right person to revitalize the party. The 38-year-old Langworthy built his support from local Republican leaders across upstate. His plans include recruitment of more female candidates, an effort to draw younger voters and an overhaul of the party's fundraising operation. Read the full story in the Times Union.
