Catskill law will protect trees in public areas

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the village of Catskill is in the early stages of enacting a law to protect trees planted in public areas from being cut down or damaged. The measure seeks to protect, among others, trees that are being planted as part of the Main Street Memorial Trees program. The program, funded by private donations, has planted 12 trees on Main Street since spring and has 10 more ready to plant in the fall. The law under consideration is based on the “Village Shade Tree Ordinance” adopted last month in Saugerties. To accompany the law, the village will create a tree commission to oversee the care and maintenance of the trees. The law is expected to go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.
