Bill would allow minors to get vaccinations without parental consent
Mar 11, 2019 12:11 am
Bethany Bump reports in the Albany Times Union that the busy legislative session in Albany continues this week with New York legislators introducing a bill to allow children as young as 14 to get vaccinated without parental consent. Children could protect themselves from the measles, meningitis, and human papillomavirus if their parents don't get them vaccinated. Right now, New York has a large measles outbreak, mostly downstate, with more than 200 reported cases. Seven states and the District of Columbia now allow minors to get vaccinations without parental permission. "I don't introduce bills like this lightly because I have a fundamental respect for parents' rights," Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy said Friday, introducing the measure. "But when we're on the verge of a public health crisis, I think we have to put the importance of the public at large first." Read the full story in the Albany Times Union.
