Albany waiting for Cuomo to nominate election official

Jun 08, 2021 11:11 am

Chris Bragg reports in the Times Union that with election season beginning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet announced a nominee to oversee enforcement of state election laws. The Board of Elections chief enforcement counsel requires both Assembly and state Senate confirmation, so if no one is nominated before the legislative session ends this week, the position could remain open until 2022. Bragg claims "People familiar with the matter said Cuomo's likely nominee for the post is Michael Johnson, who works for the administration at the state Dormitory Authority, where he is director of the office of Diversity and Inclusion." But the Cuomo administration is not officially commenting on the matter. Former Board of Elections chief enforcement counsel Risa Sugarman retired in January. Bragg writes that the enforcement counsel has oversight of election spending, including political party committees and independent expenditure groups that can spend and raise unlimited amounts of money.Read more about this story in the Times Union.
