Ancram back and forth on library funding
Oct 08, 2018 12:12 am
Diane Valden reports in The Columbia Paper that Councilmember Hugh Clark voted against an increase in Ancram's contribution to the Roeliff Jansen Community Library, and Supervisor Art Bassin refused to vote, thus defeating the proposal at the Sept. 20 meeting. Currently, Ancram contributes just $7,500 to the library, while the other towns that share the facility, Copake and Hillsdale, pitch in $55,000 and $42,000, respectively. The proposal from Councilmember Bonnie Hundt was to raise Ancram's contribution to $17,500, but after the vote that proposal will not be included in the town's preliminary budget. According to the library, 548 town residents with Mid-Hudson Library System cards list the Roeliff Jansen Community Library as their home library. Town residents voted twice several years ago not to approved an annual tax levy to fund the library. After the meeting Bassin told the paper he would ignore the vote, and include the library’s requested increase in the preliminary budget. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
