Justin McDaniel is reporting for Philly [dot] com in 2018, 93 gun-related incidents occurred in K-12 schools nationwide, the highest number since recording began in 1970, and more than double the number reported in 2017. The previous record was set in 2006, with 59 incidents, according to data released by the Center for Homeland Defense and Security Naval Postgraduate School. The incidents accounted for are defined as any time a gun "is brandished, is fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason." The total includes shootings where there was no victim. According to the record kept by Education Week, 113 people were killed or injured in school shootings in 2018, with 23 shootings leading to injuries or deaths. In February, 17 were killed by a shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and in May, 10 were killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas. When interviewed in the aftermath, a Santa Fe student said she was not surprised a shooting had happened at her school. “It’s been happening everywhere,” she said. “I’ve always kind of felt like eventually, it was going to happen here, too.” The year also marked the emergence of various proposals in state legislatures and individual school districts for protecting students. Some of those proposals advocated for the arming of teachers to stocking classrooms with objects to throw at a shooter and legalizing the ability to carry firearms on school campuses. Several states passed laws expanding the ability to carry guns in places like schools and places of worship. Fri., Dec. 14, marks the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, considered by many to be a turning point in the modern gun control movement.
