Greene County legislators invest in Coxsackie property

Nov 22, 2019 12:57 am
Sarah Trafton reports in Columbia-Greene Media that Greene County taxpayers invested in real estate this week, as legislators voted Nov. 20 to pay $400,000 to buy a building in Coxsackie. Currently, Greene County is using the building as a temporary sheriff’s office, while the new county jail is being built. Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden claims that if the county can sell the building in two years for the same price they will save up to $125,000 on rent. But the real estate market could change. “I’m squeamish about buying commercial property,” Republican Catskill legislator Linda Overbaugh said. “We’re shelling out $400,000 but we don’t know what the market is going to do in Greene County.” Overbaugh and fellow Catskill Republican legislators Michael Bulich and Matthew Luvera were against the purchase in an 8-to-5 vote Nov. 20. Republicans Gregory Davis, from Greenville, and Jim Thorington, from Windham, also voted against the resolution, and the absence of Cairo Republican William Lawrence also counted as a no vote. Democrats Harry Lennon, from Cairo; and Larry Gardner, from Hunter, voted for the purchase with Republicans Patrick Linger, from New Baltimore; Jack Keller, from Catskill; Charlie Martinez, from Coxsackie; Thomas Hobart, from Coxsackie; Patricia Handel, from Coxsackie; and Ed Bloomer, from Athens. The purchase also means more county government is moving in to Coxsackie and out of Catskill. Read more about this story at HudsonValley360.com.
