No coronavirus in NY but flu is on the rise

Jan 31, 2020 12:30 pm
Bethany Bump is reporting for the Times Union Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Thu., Jan. 30, there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in New York. Cuomo's comments came as the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency over the spread of the virus and on the same day health officials reported the first known person-to-person transmission of the virus in the United States. Samples taken from 11 people in New York have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing, Cuomo said. Seven of those samples came back negative for the novel coronavirus and four of the tests are still pending. "New York does not have one single confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, but we are taking every necessary precaution to protect against its spread into our state,” Cuomo said. “We have been here before, and I want to remind New Yorkers that it is much more likely that they will be exposed to the influenza virus than to the coronavirus.” And indeed, the number of confirmed flu cases is on the rise. Last week, more than 15,000 lab-confirmed cases of flu were reported to the state Department of Health, an increase of 11 percent from the previous week, and flu-related hospitalizations rose 8 percent. Flu season typically begins in October and ends in May. Basic precautions against the flu include regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with those who are sick.
