The Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting wild turkeys that had overrun the grounds of the South Beach Psychiatric Center on Staten Island have a new home at a sanctuary in Catskill. Brian Shapiro, the New York director of the Humane Society of the United States, facilitated the move of the birds, which he said otherwise would have been euthanized. The turkeys are now living at a new sanctuary, And-Hof Sanctuary for Farm Animals, created by Kurt Andernach. The U.S. Department of Agriculture collected the birds from the hospital grounds and transported them to Catskill. The state Office of Mental Health and Department of Environmental Conservation worked with Shapiro to move the birds to their new home. Last year, 28 wild turkeys were rounded up at the same hospital grounds and brought to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
