Greenport voters to decide on longer terms for supervisor, highway superintendent

Jun 04, 2021 6:00 am

Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Greenport Town Board June 2, unanimously approved a resolution to extend the terms of the town supervisor and highway superintendent from two to four years. The resolution will be subject to a public referendum, town attorney Genevieve Trigg said, and town voters will be asked to approve the measure in November. The resolution included both positions, but the questions will be presented separately on the ballot, she said. If the measure receives a majority of the vote, it will apply to the terms beginning Jan. 1, 2024. Greenport Town Supervisor Kathy Eldridge told the board that attempts were made a couple of years ago to lengthen the term for town supervisor. Town Clerk Sharon Zempko explained that an attempt to extend the supervisor's term a few years ago did not pass. The elected positions of town supervisor and highway superintendent are the only posts in town government carrying two-year terms. “It takes two years for projects to get off the ground,” Eldridge said. In the first year of office, the supervisor works from their predecessor's budget, she added. Eldridge was elected supervisor in 2017 and 2019; current Highway Superintendent John Mausolf was elected in 2019 and was sworn into office in January 2020. The town clerk, town board members and town justice all serve four-year terms. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
