Fate to of Durham Elementary to be decided next week

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the fate of the Durham Elementary School now lies in the hands of the Cairo-Durham Board of Education. The matter will be resolved by Dec. 20, at the board's next scheduled meeting. Three options for future use of the building have been presented. The so-called "Princeton Plan" was the favored choice, as of the Dec. 6 board meeting. That plan calls for grades kindergarten through second to be located in the Durham building, with grades three through five in the Cairo Elementary School. That scenario would eliminate eight, full-time teaching positions, and result in a reported savings of more than a half million dollars. The district is facing a $2 million deficit in 2013-14.
