Cuomo signs law allowing New York to hand over Trump's tax records

Nick Niedzwiadek is reporting for Politico New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law July 8, authorizing the release of state tax returns to three congressional committees, opening a new avenue for Democrats to gain access to some of President Donald Trump’s closely guarded financial records. "By amending the law enforcement exception in New York State tax code to include Congressional tax-related committees, this bill gives Congress the ability to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities, strengthen our democratic system and ensure that no one is above the law," Cuomo said in a release. The law allows the state Department of Taxation and Finance to share returns of top federal, state or local government officials with the congressional committees that have jurisdiction over tax matters. The law does not apply to private citizens. “This is a momentous step in upholding the principle that top elected officials have a responsibility to be more transparent and accountable,” Assemblymember David Buchwald, a tax attorney who authored the legislation, said on Twitter. The measure is the latest action taken by state Democrats against the president. The Legislature also passed a bill that would allow state prosecutors to bring charges against individuals who have received presidential pardons. That bill has not yet been sent to the governor for his signature. Read the full story at Politico New York.
