Sheriffs' Association says local police can ask about immigration status

Sep 21, 2017 2:01 pm
Joe Mahoney reports in The Daily Star that the the New York State Sheriffs' Association issued a memo to its members this week telling them they aren't required to stop asking people about their immigration status, despite an announcement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week to the contrary. Thomas Mitchell, counsel to the association, said in the memo that the Cuomo directive, "applies to state officers, and has no application to local law enforcement, and does not apply to Sheriff's Offices." Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said farmers in his county rely on many immigrants but said his agency will cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents when necessary. "The State Police have to follow the governor," Desmond said. "We have to follow what's right for the people of the county and what's right for the farmers, as far as I'm concerned."
