Barbara Reina reported in the Register Star Assemblyman Peter Lopez announced his plan to seek re-election, Fri., May 25. The announcement was made at the Hydroelectric Station in Stuyvesant Falls. The Schoharie Republican is seeking to represent the newly formed 102nd District, comprised of all of Greene and Schoharie counties, parts of Albany, Delaware and Otsego counties, the towns of Stuyvesant and Stockport in Columbia County, plus the town of Saugerties in Ulster County, according to Reina. Among Lopez's priorities: Tax relief for families; support of farms and small businesses, job growth, ending unfunded mandates and promoting quality public education. Eckert reported in The Daily Mail, Lopez and fellow Republican Assemblyman George Amedore were endorsed by the Greene County GOP at its unofficial convention, Thurs., May 24. Amedore, of Rotterdam, is hoping to win a seat in the state Senate representing the newly drawn 46th district, which encompasses Greene County and part of Ulster County. Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star the building located at 25 Railroad Ave. in Hudson has received a clean bill of health. A report issued by the environmental consulting firm Nelson, Pope & Voorhis, commissioned by the United Public Service Employees Union, found the site contains "no immediate or existing threat to human health.” Earlier this month, the Columbia County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of the building, which houses the Department of Social Services, at the cost of nearly $1.3 million. Jim Planck reported in The Daily Mail the Haines Falls Free Library was recently awarded $55,747 in construction funds from a major New York state grant program. The funds will be used to renovate the former Marion Center, to be known as the Mountaintop Library, in Tannersville. Haines Falls was one of 192 public libraries chosen statewide. Eckert reported in The Daily Mail the Dragon Garden restaurant of West Coxsackie is facing charges of poaching fish from the Hudson River after a raid by the state Department of Environmental Conservation last week. Following a weeklong investigation, DEC Police charged and ticketed Dragon Garden's owner with illegal possession of untagged striped bass in a restaurant and illegal commercialization. More than 40 pounds of a variety of fish allegedly taken from Hudson River and Coxsackie Reservoir were found on the premises. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
