Paul Kirby reports in The Daily Freeman that Republican state Assemblyperson Chris Tague is against the Driver's License Access and Privacy Act, which would allow migrants to get New York driver's licenses. Tague, who represents Greene County, and parts of Ulster, Delaware, and Schoharie counties, says the bill’s "focus is certainly laudable, and I’m sure the sponsors’ hearts are in the right place, but we have other issues the Legislature should be focusing on first.... Wherever you stand on giving illegal immigrants access to driver’s licenses, you’re giving them a legal government document, which is incredible to me.... Beyond that, where I grew up, you follow the law.... At the end of the day, we’re a nation of laws, and if we don’t stand on that, we have nothing." Democrats have the numbers to pass the Driver's License Access and Privacy Act, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign it if the legislature passes the measure. The immigrants rights advocacy group Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson is backing the bill. “Undocumented immigrants, who must drive to reach work, worship or school, can do so with less risk, which will allow them to participate and contribute more fully to local community life,” the group says.
