Cost of Thanksgiving meal increases

Nov 21, 2018 12:15 pm
Diego Mendoza-Moyers is reporting for the Times Union shoppers will likely pay more for their Thanksgiving meal this year than last, according to the New York Farm Bureau's annual Market Basket survey. The average total cost for a holiday meal for 10 is $55 this year, up from $45 in 2017 — a nearly 22 percent increase. Nationally, that same Thanksgiving meal on average will cost $49, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. The higher overall price can be attributed to an increase in turkey prices. A 16-pound frozen turkey is priced at nearly $30 in New York, up from $21 last year. The survey includes turkey, stuffing, bread rolls, green beans, milk, cranberries, carrots, pumpkin pie mix, pie crust, celery, sweet potatoes and whipping cream. The survey did find that some holiday feast ingredients are a bit cheaper this year. Milk, carrots and cranberries all cost less than last year. In 1986, the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for 10 was nearly $29, or about $66 in 2018 dollars, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Read the full story in the Times Union.
