Molinaro distances himself from hate group that spoke at GOP event

Kenneth Lovett reports in The Daily News that Marc Molinaro on Oct. 16 stopped blasting “radical leftists” for a Manhattan fight and vandalization last weekend, and started blaming his own party for the brawl. A Manhattan Republican Club invited the head of the ultranational right wing group The Proud Boys to speak over the weekend. Gavin McInnes is known for spewing hate, but Molinaro said he was not aware of his background when he first commented on the issue. “It was suggested to me that I am at the top of the ticket,” Molinaro said. “I don’t know if I appreciated that and the immediacy of what occurred at the Metropolitan (Republican) club.” A fight broke out, and opponents of the hate group vandalized the Republican space where he spoke. Molinaro, currently the Dutchess County Executive running for governor, said he is “a bit ashamed” that the club invited the racist to speak over the weekend. “I’m embarrassed these individuals were invited to speak,” Molinaro told the Daily News Editorial Board. McInnes’ “language and behavior, though some seem to describe it as a form of comedy, I find it to be highly intolerant language which incites violence,” Molinaro said. That puts him at odds with New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox, who said McInnes was invited because of an amusing skit he had performed previously that reenacted the some Japanese history.
