Greene County breaks ground on jail soon

May 31, 2019 12:58 am
Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the new Greene County Jail will break ground the week of June 10, after Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden returns from a vacation, according to Deputy Greene County Administrator Warren Hart. The county is awaiting final permits from the Department of Environmental Conservation, but not from word from state government officials that they are allowed to share jail services with another county. Currently Greene County is sharing jail services with Albany and Columbia counties, so sharing jail services is clearly not illegal in New York as some Greene County Legislators have claimed. Still, Assemblyperson Joseph R. Lentol introduced a bill in Albany May 29 authorizing Greene County to enter an agreement with a contiguous county to share the construction, financing, improvement and/or maintenance of a county jail. Dianna Goodwin, a senior adviser to state Sen. Luis Sepulveda said May 30 that Sepulveda and state Sen. Jamaal Bailey will co-sponsor a companion bill in the State Senate. Windham businessman Nick Bove, one of many residents protesting against the tax increase a new jail will incur, said that when the state legislature ends, “By June 19, we want to have an explicit law allowing us to do this,” he said. “We want it loud and clear, so it is undeniably clear.” But, by then, construction on the new jail will have already begun.
