Galvan Motel to open this summer

May 09, 2019 2:30 pm
Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Galvan Motel is expected to open this summer. The facility will serve the homeless population of Columbia County. The Columbia County Board of Supervisors May 9, approved a contract with the Galvan Foundation to house homeless people at the site of the former Sunset Motel, on Route 9 in Greenport. Galvan anticipated reopening the 25-room motel last year, but construction delays held up the project. The facility is currently looking to fill various positions, including a live-in motel manager, assistant motel manager as well as a housekeeping job. The manager would be provided a place to live rent-free in a residence adjacent to the motel, in addition to receiving a salary. The Mental Health Association of Columbia and Greene Counties will also provide two full-time case managers who will be available at the motel for 11 hours every day. Finding quality motel rooms to house people in an emergency has been a struggle for the county. Officials currently place people at the Joslen Motel in Hudson, and the Yorkshire Motel in Claverack.
