Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper at its February 20 meeting, the Chatham Town Board heard from Columbia County Sheriff 1st Sergeant Louis Bray about the Enhanced Enforcement Patrol program. The agreement is renewed annually and provides the town with hours of patrolling by a sheriff’s deputy. Bray said the enhancement patrols most often deal with traffic issues, but they can also be used for town events like parades. “We do it because there is a need for it,” he said of the program. Bray pointed out that the town could tell the sheriff’s office where patrols are needed, but that “the town’s not going to tell the sheriff how to do police work.” Highway Superintendent Joe Rickert said he appreciated the help he received from the sheriff’s office, adding, “I hope this service continues.” The board has now approved the contract for 2020.
