Catskill borrowing, raising rates to pay for water system improvements

Feb 18, 2019 12:23 am
Sarah Trafton reports in Columbia-Greene Media that after a cold winter with several water main breaks, the Catskill Village Board voted for a $250,000 bond Feb. 13 to upgrades to the village’s water system. The bond from the Bank of Greene County pays for a new filter for the water plant, new water meters, and a new billing software. “There are three [filtration] units in the plant,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Michael McGrath said. “One filter is cracked.” The village will be making quarterly payments of $15,000 for five years to pay back the bond. “The system is 20 years old and takes a heck of a beating,” McGrath said. “Unfortunately, we have to replace it.” Village President Vincent Seeley said, “We plan on increasing water rates to compensate for the much-needed improvements and debt payments.... The payments won’t start until after our next budget cycle begins in June." Read the full story at HudsonValley360.com.
