Lauren Stanforth reports for the Times Union that an 11-year-old died in Hunter Feb. 29, falling from a cliff in Catskill State Park while ice climbing with others. Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky said the boy was climbing with two other children and four adults, including his father, on what is "known locally as 'The Dark Side'" off Platte Clove Road. The boy lost his footing and fell about 300 feet into the gorge. "It had a rope tied between trees for safety, but apparently the child lost his footing and let go of the rope," Kusminsky said. The Department of Environmental Conservation regulates the park. "I didn't hear of any plans for them to close it," Kusminsky said. "I'm sure there will some warnings even though they're already posted. It is a popular climbing place." Read more about this story in the Times Union.
