Andrews challenges opponents to debate

Billy Shannon writes in the Register Star 43rd District state Senate Democratic challenger Robin Andrews has challenged her opponents to a series of debates, leading up to the general election in November. Potential Republican candidates incumbent Roy McDonald and Karthy Marchione are still awaiting the results of their primary face-off, last Thursday. Absentee ballots in Columbia County will be opened Mon., Sept. 24. Regardless of those results, both candidates already have a spot on the ballot -- McDonald on the Independence line, Marchione on the Conservative. “Clearly it’s a three-way race no matter what since we all have a line,” Andrews told the paper, Tuesday. Andrews challenged McDonald and Marchione to a series of debates, the dates and locations to be determined. The redrawn 43rd Senate District includes Columbia County, most of Rensselaer County and parts of Saratoga and Washington counties. Read the full story in the Register Star.
Rick Karlin speculates at Capitol Confidential that if Marchione ends up winning the GOP line, Andrews could find herself the recipient of a half-million dollars in last-minute campaign contributions from deep-pocketed supporters of marriage equality intent on keeping Marchione out of the Senate. Marchione, the Saratoga County Clerk, challenged McDonald largely on his vote last year in support of marriage equality. “It would obviously help,” Andrews said when told that she could get a financial windfall. She said she currently has about $40,000 on hand, a fraction of what her GOP primary contestants spent. Unlike Marchione and McDonald, Andrews has run no TV ads.
