A tanker truck hauling 8,000 gallons of jet fuel rolled over on American Oil Road in the Port of Rensselaer Mon., May 31, sending firefighters scrambling to determine if fuel was leaking from the tanker, town police said. The state Department of Environmental Conservation was called to the scene to join the investigation and to help the East Greenbush Fire Department with its response to the emergency. Fire Chief Jeff Tooker said the tanker is not leaking but fumes are venting from the tank, as it is designed to do. Another tanker was dispatched from Cape Cod, Mass., to pump out the jet fuel. Once it's emptied, the damaged tanker can be righted. The recovery operation is expected to continue indefinitely. The J.P. Noonan Transportation truck was traveling north with its load of jet fuel when it rolled onto its side, police said. The cause of the crash was not immediately available. The driver escaped without injury. The tanker was headed to Dalton, Mass. The southern portion of the Port of Rensselaer is located in the town of East Greenbush; its northern section is the city of Rensselaer. The Troy Fire Department hazardous materials truck arrived at the site of the leaking tanker to assist.
