Dec 02, 2020 1:34 pm
A new newspaper called Porcupine Soup debuted its first issue Nov. 28 in Greene County. The news outlet covers Greenville, Cairo, and Durham, and is owned and operated by Sylvia Hasenkopf and Andrea Macko. The Greenville Pioneer was founded in 2010 by Macko, a 1999 Greenville High School graduate and lifelong Greene County resident. Hasenkopf is a local historian, who wrote a history column for the Pioneer. "Our mission at Porcupine Soup is to provide information without influence," the news outlet's website says. Andrea Macko is the niece of Greenville Town Supervisor Paul Macko. The new paper's first stories includes one about Rensselaerville in southern Albany County ("Carey Institute for sale for $2.75 million"), another about local economics ("County taxes: Greenville down, Cairo and Durham up"), and another about local infrastructure ("Cairo bridge reopening delayed"). The paper also includes many former Greenville Pioneer columnists including MaryLou Nahas, Dick Brooks, and Bob Beyfuss. The Greenville Pioneer is now owned by Capital Region Independent Media, which also runs the Ravena News-Herald.
