Deer take down five percent
Apr 24, 2018 12:33 pm
The Altamont Enterprise rounds up statistics from a Department of Environmental Conservation press release about 2017 hunting in New York. Hunters killed an estimated 203,427 deer during the 2017-18 hunting season, five percent less than the previous year. In the Southern Zone, which includes the WGXC listening area, hunters killed 178,076 deer, including 89,730 adult bucks. More older bucks were killed then ever, but fewer antlerless deer were taken, despite the DEC issuing more antlerless permits last season. Also, 50.9 percent of the adult bucks killed were yearlings, about one-and-a-half years-old, the lowest percentage on record. And 2,402 deer were tested for Chronic Wasting Disease in 2017-18 with none testing positive. Read the full story in The Altamont Enterprise.
