Jan 27, 2018 12:15 am
Patricia R. Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman that there are still hundereds of thousands of New York gun owners who need to comply with recertification requirements before a Jan. 31 deadline. State police say hundreds of thousands of gun owners have complied with the recertification requirements set up by New York’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms law, or SAFE Act, but many more pistol permit holders need to fill out their forms in the next few days. Beau Duffy, the director of public affairs for the New York State Police, said, “I can’t speak for local law enforcement, but I can confirm that the state police will not take criminal enforcement action against individuals who have unknowingly failed to recertify.... We’re also going to accept applications past the deadline.” The police report 280,000 people have recertified as of Jan. 26. John McGovern, chief civil officer for the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, said they are getting many calls about out-of-date addresses and from permit holders who need to know the date their permit was originally issued. Pistol permit holders can register online at firearms.troopers.ny.gov/pprecert/welcome.faces or by downloading the documents on the website or getting them from any state police barracks.
