Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a proposal to create a second Windham Path has received a thumbs up from the Batavia Kill Watershed District board. Windham Area Recreation Foundation President Nick Bove said the plan is to add another two-mile loop near the historic Nauvoo dam. The original Windham Path opened in 2013 and Bove estimates it now has 300,000 visitors every year. “[The parcel] is pristine, beautiful, and we feel like by getting people out there in a responsible, sustainable path, we will create stewards of the land,” he said. The Nauvoo dam is in place for flood prevention and has the same rating as the dam at C.D. Lane Park. The inspection and safety ratings of dams falls under the authority of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Bove is confident that with a proper mitigation plan, the path would not disturb the dam. While the new path would not be directly connected to the existing Windham Path, there are future opportunities to connect the two. “We’d like to get a viable path as soon as we can,” Bove said.
