Timothy Knight reports in The Watershed Post about the fallout from the swastikas decorating Esperance in Schoharie County recently. Police arrested a 13-year-old on Jan. 5, charged with ten counts of making graffiti and one count of burglary in the third degree, with a future date in family court. Police say the teenager acted alone, and deny any ethnic or racial hatred, saying the teen knew the symbol through video games and chose the swastika because it was easy to draw. But the alleged unsophistication of method came with very specific targets including a church, and a business run by a former state senator. The Esperance Old Stone Presbyterian Church, built in 1824, and CeCe’s Wool Farm Store, owned by former state senator and former WGXC host Cecilia Tkaczyk, were among the targets. “This is not what Schoharie County should be known for,” she said. The swastikas were painted two weeks after the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors tabled a resolution calling for inclusion and respect, the Cobleskill Times Journal reported. Republicans claimed the resolution was too anti-Donald Trump, and it has been resubmitted to the Rules Committee. Read the full story in The Watershed Post.
