Albany considers some prison reform

Rick Karlin in The Albany Times-Union reports that after the prison escape in Dannemora last June, Albany legislators continue to hold hearings to prevent another massive manhunt. At a budget hearing Feb. 4 Acting Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner Anthony Annucci said correctional officers may soon be using pepper spray, and New York prisons are buying portable metal detectors to look for homemade knives. They also want to reduce the use of canned goods, as the sharp metal lids can be turned into weapons. But Richard Matt and David Sweat, the escapees, didn't need weapons, as they snuck out, and weren't found for weeks in a search that cost $25 million. Annucci told lawmakers that the Inspector General's office has become the Office of Special Investigations. Manhattan Democratic Assemblyman Danny O'Donnell wasn't impressed with the new oversight office. "I went out and bought some skinny jeans but that doesn't mean I'm skinny," he said.
