No news on Corwallville housing development

Apr 08, 2021 5:30 am

Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup a proposed housing development in Cornwallville that has drawn criticism from residents was on the agenda at the Durham Town Board workshop meeting April 6. Town Supervisor Shawn Marriott explained the town’s commissioned engineering firm, Lamont Engineers, had reviewed the plans and was now awaiting a reply from the applicant, Bosque Development. The proposed project includes a 95-acre subdivision with the construction of 12 new homes and a farming operation. The property borders Strong Road to the east and Cornwallville Road to the west. Marriott said there is currently no new information. He said town officials are receiving correspondence from residents both for and against the project. He said many of the people writing in support of the development are afraid to speak out publicly. Since the project was first proposed in December, residents have attended town meetings in large numbers, mostly expressing opposition. “There are well over 200 local residents that do not want this development, which is a suburban development, not something that is routine for the hamlet of Cornwallville or the town,” resident John Doherty said at the March town board meeting. Resident Daniel Clifton said, “It is the scale… suddenly plunking 13 houses — 12 houses and a live-in barn — in the middle of the historic district and it will change the nature of the community.” The town board has not yet made a decision on the project and more presentations, as well as public hearings, will occur in the coming months.
