Rhinebeck school board to add live stream of its meetings

Nov 29, 2020 5:45 am
William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman the Rhinebeck school board is reviewing whether to conduct their meetings via live stream. The question was discussed during a Board of Education session November 24. Superintendent Albert Cousins said the technology needed to broadcast meetings through a common platform should be ready within a month. At present, those who wish to view the board meeting must attend in person or wait for a recording, which is later uploaded to YouTube. The board conducted its meetings on video conference platforms from March to June this year and returned to in-person meetings in July. Although the ability to understand what board members are saying has improved during the past several months, the quality of live broadcasts is not always the best. State Committee on Open Government Assistant Director Kristin O’Neill said there is a learning curve that has been part of the move to having meetings live-streamed, but boards should have figured it out by now. “They need to make efforts to make sure that ... people can hear.  If they are not doing that, they are not really complying with the intent of the Open Meetings Law, which is to allow the public to listen to and, under normal circumstances, also observe the deliberations and decision-making of public bodies.” Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
