Barrett, others complain about Charter's Columbia County broadband service

Richard Moody reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Assemblyperson Didi Barrett, a Democrat who represents the 106th District in Albany, wants the state comptroller to audit Charter Communications Inc. about the company’s broadband expansion, or lacktherof, locally. Charter, merged with Time Warner Cable in 2016, and the merger requires the company to connect its existing Columbia County systems to broadband speeds of 100 megabytes per second within 30-months. “We’ve been frustrated with the whole process,” Ghent Town Supervisor Michael Benvenuto said. “They sent me a four-page non-disclosure agreement so I would have the information, but I can’t tell others. People expect answers.” State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman also has questions, alleging Charter defrauded New York customers with promises of high-speed internet services the company did not provide. But the company says it is working on the issue. “Charter is expanding broadband access and raising internet speeds across New York state, including in Columbia County,” said Andrew Russell, Charter Northeast’s director of communications. “We are meeting our commitments and are on track to continue to do so.” Barrett, though, is unsatisfied with their statements. “Columbia County residents deserve transparency and accountability as they await the full broadband access essential to function and flourish in the 21st Century,” she said. “We are calling upon the state comptroller to ensure Charter’s compliance as it relates to their agreement with the Public Service Commission.” Read the full story in HudsonValley360.com.
