The Stevens Institute reports temperatures this week in the Hudson River at Schodack Island have been between 47 and 53 degrees, five degrees cooler than last week's high.

William J. Kemble reports in The Daily Freeman that U.S. Coast Guard officials met with about 45 representatives from environmental groups, municipalities, and the shipping industry Nov. 7 and 8 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel in another attempt to site large-vessel anchorage grounds on the Hudson River. In June, the Coast Guard suspended its review of a proposal for 10 new anchorage grounds on the river between Kingston and Yonkers. In October, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation requiring a state-level study of any plans for large-vessel anchorage grounds on the Hudson River. Town of Rhinebeck Supervisor Elizabeth Spinzia named the many issues involved in letting large barges park on the Hudson River. “There’s the viewshed, there’s visual pollution, there’s light pollution, there’s noise pollution,” she said. “There’s limitless damage that can be caused by this.” John Lipscomb, a boat captain for the environmental protection group Riverkeeper, said the meetings are a good idea. “This is a very rigid, structured conversation, and things that are going to be considered are things like vessel conditions, traffic conditions, navigational conditions, waterway conditions, immediate consequences of an accident, and subsequent consequences of an accident,” he said. The Mid-Hudson News Network reports in The Daily Freeman that the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River between Catskill and Greenport, had the largest traffic increase of the river's bridges, up 2.17 percent this September from 2016. Revenue on the Rip Van Winkle also rose 2.95 percent, though it lagged behind the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, which rose 3.33 percent. Traffic volume increased on all five Hudson River bridges operated by the New York State Bridge Authority in September 2017 over September 2016, according to the authority.

Nina Schutzman reports in the Poughkeepsie Journal that Angelika Graswald was sentenced to four years in prison Nov. 8 after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide. Graswald admitted she removed a plug from her husband's kayak before it capsized on the Hudson River in 2015. Read the full story in the Poughkeepsie Journal.
